Lecture I "Holy Matter, Holy Place: Transfer of Sacred Soil from Jerusalem to Europe in the Middle Ages"

Lecturer:

Dr. Neta Bodner

In a lecture titled "Holy Matter, Holy Place: Transfer of Sacred Soil from Jerusalem to Europe in the Middle Ages", Dr. Bodner discussed the transfer of soil from the sacred site of Akeldama near Jerusalem to European cemeteries in the High Middle Ages as attested in pilgrim accounts, maps and chronicles.

The discussion revolved around the particulars of soil as a transferable relic of the Holy Land, the legends and miracles most commonly associated with it, and the dynamics of its use once interred in its new location.

This lecture was presented in Dr. Renana Bartal's M.A. course (in Tel-Aviv University) named "Matter, Relic, and Place in Medieval Culture".
