Seminar I Where History and Literature Meet: Sources for Medieval Jewish History

Lecturer:

Prof. Susan Einbinder (UConn), Visiting Professor
This fall, Beyond the Elite and the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel School for Advanced Studies in the Humanities at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem collaborated together on an eight-week seminar taught by Prof. Susan Einbinder (University of Connecticut) on the use of literary sources for historical research. The aim of the course was to scrutinize different genres of literary texts, both prose and poetry, asking which types of information can be treated as historical material and which have to be read as literary tropes or aesthetic constructs. The course spanned texts from Germany, France, Spain, and Italy from the
eleventh to the fourteenth centuries, and included such varied texts as magical treatises, 1096 chronicles, parody, poetry, and polemics.
